EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE OF PATIENTS WITH SYSTEMIC ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION TREATED IN AN OUTPATIENT CLINIC IN PIAUÍ
Main Article Content
Abstract
Systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) is a chronic multifactorial condition
characterized by the sustained elevation of blood pressure levels, representing one
of the leading causes of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in Brazil. This study
aimed to characterize the epidemiological profile of patients with SAH treated in
outpatient clinics in the state of Piauí, from 2015 to 2025, using data from the
Brazilian National Outpatient Information System (SIA/SUS). Indicators related to
outpatient production, demographic profile, temporal distribution, and trends in
hypertensive patient care were analyzed. The analysis revealed a progressive
increase in the number of outpatient visits, with a slight reduction in 2020 and
2021—coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic period—and a subsequent
recovery starting in 2022. A predominance of male patients was observed,
particularly those aged 40 to 59 years, mostly from low-income and low-education
groups, highlighting the influence of social determinants of health. The pattern
identified is consistent with national studies that demonstrate the expansion of
outpatient follow-up for hypertensive patients and the strengthening of primary
health care initiatives. These findings reinforce the importance of continuous
surveillance and epidemiological monitoring of hypertension as essential tools for
the planning and evaluation of public health policies in the state of Piauí.
