Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the scientific evidence on the quality of prenatal care and its impact on maternal health in municipalities of Piauí, Brazil, between 2015 and 2025. It is an integrative literature review conducted through the Virtual Health Library (VHL), using the MEDLINE, LILACS, BDENF, and SciELO databases. The descriptors “maternal health,” “prenatal care,” and “quality of health care” were applied, combined using the Boolean operators AND and OR. After screening and applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 12 studies were included in the final sample. The results showed significant inequalities in the quality of prenatal care across municipalities, mainly due to poor infrastructure, shortage of qualified professionals, and deficiencies in health service management. There was also an association between the reduced number of consultations and the occurrence of obstetric complications, particularly gestational hypertension and preterm birth. Municipalities with greater Family Health Strategy coverage showed better indicators of early initiation and continuity of care. It is concluded that improving prenatal care requires strengthening primary care, investing in infrastructure, and implementing public policies to ensure equitable access and quality. Educational actions and humanized care are essential to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality and to promote better health outcomes for pregnant women in Piauí.
