EVALUATION OF THE ANTIFUNGAL ACTIVITY OF BIXIN AGAINST CANDIDA ALBICANS

Abstract

Fungal infections are a significant public health problem, especially in light of the increasing
resistance to conventional antifungals. This study evaluated the ex vivo antifungal activity of a
carboxymethylcellulose gel formulation containing bixin, as well as a gel with silver nanoparticles,
against Candida albicans in pigskin fragments. It refers to an experimental, ex vivo, controlled
study conducted in a laboratory environment, with standardized inoculum and infection induction.
The skin fragments were distributed into experimental groups treated with bixin gel, NanoAg gel,
ketoconazole, and a negative control.Fungal viability was determined by quantifying colonyforming
units. The results showed that the formulations containing bixin and NanoAg did not
significantly reduce fungal growth compared to the negative control, while ketoconazole achieved
complete elimination of colonies. These findings suggest that, under the evaluated conditions, the
tested formulations did not demonstrate relevant antifungal efficacy, indicating the need for
optimization of the composition, active release, and exposure time for future therapeutic
applications.
