Abstract

Non-communicable chronic diseases (NCDs) have a significant impact on society and require prolonged care; therefore, home care (HC) is considered an effective alternative strategy, contributing to continuity of care, humanization of assistance, and reduction of costs and unnecessary hospitalizations. Assistive technologies involve any resource, device, or system intended to improve or maintain the functionality, autonomy, and quality of life of the people being assisted. This study aimed to analyze the role of assistive technologies in the home care of patients with NCDs, considering their impacts on autonomy, quality of life, and adherence to treatment; to investigate the use of assistive technologies in home care; and to identify the types of assistive technologies most used by patients with NCDs at home, analyzing the benefits, challenges, and barriers faced in the adoption and use of these technologies in the home context. This is an integrative literature review, conducted using articles available on research platforms such as SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), PubMed, BVS (Virtual Health Library), LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences Information), and Google Scholar, focusing on articles published between 2022 and 2025. After screening and applying eligibility criteria, fifteen studies were selected for the final sample. The results indicated three relevant categories in the data analysis: The role of assistive technologies in home care for patients with NCDs; Assistive technologies most used by patients with NCDs at home: benefits, challenges, and impacts on autonomy, quality of life, and adherence to NCD treatment; thus, resources such as telemonitoring, applications, wearable devices, orthoses, and prostheses promote self-care, adherence to treatment, and functional independence. It is concluded that the use of assistive technologies in home care for people with NCDs promotes autonomy, quality of life, and continuity of care. Educational and digital technologies strengthen the bond between patients, families, and healthcare professionals, with particular emphasis on the role of nursing. Despite the benefits, challenges persist, such as unequal access, infrastructure limitations, high costs, and the need for professional training. Overcoming these barriers requires public policies, institutional investments, and valuing home care to ensure comprehensive and equitable care.
