Abstract

The definition of beauty has varied throughout history, influenced by social and cultural factors. In the contemporary context, the emphasis on physical appearance has encouraged the pursuit of aesthetic procedures as a strategy to enhance self-esteem. This study aimed to analyze the influence of aesthetic procedures on mental health and self-esteem, considering that such interventions may affect not only body aesthetics but also psychological well-being. An integrative literature review with a descriptive and qualitative approach was conducted, based on full-text, peer-reviewed scientific articles published in Portuguese and English between 2005 and 2025. The databases consulted were SciELO, PubMed, and Google Scholar. The analysis of nine studies revealed that aesthetic procedures contributed to improvements in self-image, self-confidence, and self-esteem, as well as to enhanced emotional well-being and quality of life. In some cases, a reduction in appearancerelated anxiety was also observed. These findings highlight the importance of an ethical and humanized approach by professionals in the field, taking into account patients’ motivations and individual needs.
