ASSESSMENT OF FOOD CONSUMPTION AND BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) IN HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AND STUDENTS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Nutritional status and body mass index (BMI) are key parameters for assessing health and metabolic balance. Among healthcare professionals, who play a central role in promoting public health, maintaining healthy eating habits has become an increasing challenge, especially under demanding work conditions and occupational stress. This study aimed to analyze scientific evidence on the relationship between food consumption and BMI among healthcare professionals from 2015 to 2025 through an integrative literature review. The search was conducted in the LILACS, SciELO, PubMed, and ScienceDirect databases using the descriptors “food consumption,” “body mass index,”, “health students” and “health professionals,” combined with the Boolean operators AND and OR. Ten studies met the inclusion criteria. The findings revealed an overweight and obesity among healthcare professionals, strongly associated with poor dietary habits, long working hours, irregular meal patterns, and sedentary behavior. The analysis also showed that technical knowledge about nutrition does not necessarily translate into healthy practices. It is concluded that work environment, stress, and institutional factors have a substantial influence on dietary behaviors and BMI in this population. Therefore, intersectoral health promotion strategies focusing on nutritional education, physical activity, and psychosocial support are essential to improve the health and well-being of healthcare workers.
